JOE HAYES LOVES MUSIC

It all started with JOE

JOE is an electro-acoustic engineer who has spent decades engrossed in the esoteric science and art of music and sound. Joe loves listening to music, playing music with friends and inventing and designing sound technologies from another dimension.

JOE gained global renown with his PASSAC company in the 80’s and 90’s making remarkable audio products for professional musicians. Innovations like the Midi Guitar Sentient 6, Unity 8 unity gain rack mount mixer – a must have for all pro guitartists in the 90’s.

JOE’s Acoustic Equalizer EC1 PreAmp system in the 1980s was renowned for “smoothing out” amplified sound of any acoustic instrument making it sound much warmer and was used by the best musicians of the world. Closely collaborating with Larry Fishman he licensed and distributed globally through Martin guitars.

The problem with playback recordings

JOE’s expertise led him to working directly with great artists like James Taylor, Sting, Jonathon Richman, Brownie McGee, Keith Urban, Slim Dusty, Richard Thompson, Dan Crary, Mark O’Connor, Bela Fleck and many more. These great musicians entrusted JOE with their treasured instruments, allowing him to bring out their pure tonal qualities for live onstage performances.

JOE was originally inspired and driven by the pure live sound of a magnificent Stradivarius and richness and depth of tone of a 1967 Martin D28 guitar. He wondered why they never sounded quite the same on playback recordings – even with the best sound reproduction equipment available.

Diffusion & the solution

JOE understood that all sound is impacted and degraded by the acoustics of the room or environment it is played in. Every room creates echoes, reverb and reflections that disrupt the subtle overtones and pure audio envelope. The only solution was sophisticated and expensive acoustic room treatments – usually only available to prestigious auditoriums and hi tech recording studios.

This is known as DIFFUSION.

An acoustic Time Lord

JOE thought “what’s the point in having the best instruments or recordings if the room around us degrades the sound with specular reflections” – meaning, we hear the anomalies of the room as much as the original sound. The reality is, most people listen in the comfort of their homes, which are far from ideal acoustic spaces.

JOE saw this as a challenge and after an initial “eureka” revelation, then decades of experimentation and refinement – he discovered a way to create diffusion at the source of the sound, in the speaker itself. This creates sound waves that dissipate at reflective walls, seemingly defying the laws of physics as we know it. Effectively the walls disappear, and any time delay between speaker and ear ceases to exist – creating a Sound Beyond Space Time continuum.

DaS AuReality & the pure gold standard

JOE named this marvel ‘DaS AuReality’ – diffusion at the speaker source reveals the ‘pure gold standard’ of the unadulterated sound envelope which was the reality captured at the time of the original performance or recording and the acoustic architecture of that space. The reality of this original sonic soundstage becomes perfectly imprinted back into the playback space.

JOE created the AS8 speaker in collaboration with fellow Aussie luminaries, speaker designer Brad Serhan and Dr Toby Gifford acoustics academic research fellow to demonstrate how the esoteric science of DaS AuReality technology translates into a revolutionary sound experience that is impossible with any conventional speaker. The AS8 won a coveted Australian Good Design Award.

The story continues to evolve with JOE developing further applications and refinements including a PA system for live performances that exhibits all the remarkable qualities of DaS AuReality plus is completely immune to feedback – the bane of all performers and speakers.

Ted Orr, Head Engineer Sertso Studio, Woodstock NY speaks on Joe’s legendary electro acoustic talents …

My first Creative Music Studio group was Swollen Monkeys who recorded 2 records with producer Hal Wilner, and whose members went on to join Talking Heads, Psychedelic Furs, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, B52s, and others.

During that time I was beginning to experiment with sampling, but found MIDI guitar controllers to be too slow. One of our local fans began to work for an Australian music manufacturer, Passac, that had just developed a MIDI guitar, the Sentient Six, and he arranged for me to try it out. I was blown away, because it actually worked unlike other models I had tried!

I met company president/founder Joe Hayes in 1984 at their San Jose offices. Joe always conveyed a sense that he could see issues from a completely different point of view than most and come up with solutions very quickly. I remember discussing a unity gain rack mount mixer for my guitar rack and he grabbed a piece of paper and started designing it right there and then, and it became the Passac Unity Eight. That unit became the centerpiece of many guitarists racks in the 90s.
